Maktab
The mission of the Maktab program at Makkah Learning Center is to provide a healthy and rewarding Islamic learning environment for students. Maktab’s core curriculum is centered around:
Learning the Arabic alphabet
Reading and Memorizing Qur’an with Proper Pronunciation and Tajweed
Learning the meanings of Surahs (tafseer)
Learning about the prophets and their practices
Learning Duas and Islamic etiquette
Performing Wudu, Salah, and more!
All students ages 5-17 are welcome to the Maktab program. Child has to be 5 by September 1.
To register, parents of new students must complete the Registration Form. One time $25 registration fee applicable per family.
A child with no Islamic or Arabic background will start from Level 1. A child with minimum or more education will be tested by the class teacher and they will be places accordingly.
Tuition is due by the 7th day of each month. Following a three (3) day grace period, late payment will result in an additional $5.00 fee per seven (7) days (i.e. +$5.00 until the 17th, +$10.00 until the 24th, etc.). Therefore, parents are encouraged to use our direct payment system through MOHIT, which makes payments automatically on days assigned by the card holder.

Boys
No sleeveless or short-sleeve clothing
Wear a hijab during class and prayer time
No shorts, clothing must cover ankle

* Boys and girls are discouraged from wearing clothing with graphic images and/or inappropriate language.
All student belongings should be marked for identification. This includes backpacks and winter jackets, among others. Maktab is not responsible for any lost items.
Drop-off & Pick-up
Maktab begins at 5:30pm and ends at 7:30pm. After 8:00pm, parents will be penalized $5.00 per 15 minutes for late pick up. You will be required to pay the fine when you pick up your child. Please do not ask us to make exceptions.
Early Dismissal
During Maktab hours, students are not allowed to leave without permission from the office for early dismissal without the written consent of his/her parent or guardian.
Attendance
Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for a successful learning experience. Students are discouraged from being tardy, and three (3) or more incidences will result in a meeting with the Maktab administrator and the child’s parents or guardian. A student is considered tardy if he/she arrives fifteen (15) or more minutes late.
Absence
Parents or guardians are required to notify Maktab of a child’s absence. This must be communicated through an appropriate mode (i.e. written letter, telephone, email, etc.) before 5:30pm on the day of the absence.
Maktab has the goal of establishing a proper learning atmosphere in which students feel safe, respected, happy, and inspired. In an effort to accomplish this goal, we developed an assertive discipline plan. Repetitive offenses will result in parents being called to a meeting with the principal and together work out appropriate disciplinary measure. Name-calling, bullying, hitting, etc. will not be tolerated.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION
If a student chooses to break a rule, the following consequences may result:
1st disruption – warning and teacher counsels student one-on-one explaining what an acceptable behavior is, and reinforces classroom rules
2nd disruption – note sent home for parents review and attention.
3rd disruption – parents will be called for a meeting with the administrator and an appropriate action will be taken. Maktab reserves the right to suspend any student who violates the school rules.
Maktab follows Anne Arundel County Public School’s calendar for major closings, including for major holidays, school breaks, and inclement weather.
Furthermore, Maktab acknowledges special closings for significant Islamic calendar events.
Starting with the 2018-19 academic year, Maktab is now open four (4) days a week (Mon-Thu)

Maktab is an independent program operated by the Islamic Center of Annapolis (ISA). We create our own curriculum with guidance from ISA’s Education Committee, parent and student feedback, and successful programs around the country. Outlined below are our learning outcomes for each of our grade levels:

Quarterly assessments will be conducted twice per year, once in December and once in May. Parent-teacher conferences are held in January. Additionally, we are introducing Edmodo, an online classroom service that connects parents and students with teachers. Edmodo will be used to send information regarding classwork, homework, and other updates.
Progress reports are distributed twice per year, once after midterms (during parent-teacher conferences) and once after finals. Maktab follows the AACPS guidelines for progress reports A-E scale). The ISA Education Committee and Maktab program reserve the right to make changes to the progress report as needed.
As we are preparing our students to read, memorize, and recite the Qur’an, we also encourage students to exceed the norm by practicing for our Qur’an competition, which is held at least twice a year. We host one schoolwide recitation competition, from which the top performers compete against students from other Muslim communities in the area.
We also want to promote Maktab students by encouraging them to recite during Masjid events, such as the Friday night Halaqas and fundraising events.
Maktab also strives to train students to become future leaders of our community, by preparing them to become hufaz, lead Tarawih, and give Islamic lectures.
